Tempting South Indian Pongal

A delicious and hearty dish made with rice and lentils

  • 1 cup of rice
  • 1/2 cup of moong dal
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • 1 inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon of cumin seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of red chili powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons of ghee
  • Cilantro, for garnish

Pongal is a traditional South Indian dish made with rice and lentils. It is a delicious and hearty dish that is perfect for breakfast or a light lunch. This dish is easy to make and is packed with flavors that are sure to tantalize your taste buds.

Start by washing the rice and moong dal. In a saucepan, add the rice, moong dal, and 3 cups of water. Bring it to a boil and then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it cook for 15-20 minutes or until the rice and lentils are soft and cooked through.

In a separate pan, heat the ghee and add the cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add the chopped onion, green chilies, and grated ginger. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until the onion is translucent.

Next, add the chopped tomato and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until the tomato is soft and mushy. Then add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.

Now add the turmeric powder, red chili powder and salt. Mix well and cook for another minute. Add the cooked rice and lentil mixture to the pan and mix well to combine all the flavors.

Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with coconut chutney or any other accompaniment of your choice.
