Mouthwatering Masala Vada Recipe

Masala Vada, also known as Chana Dal Vada, is a flavorful and crunchy South Indian snack made from chana dal (split Bengal gram) and spices. Follow this easy recipe to make delicious Masala Vada at home.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
  • 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated
  • 1/4 cup curry leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seeds
  • 1/2 tsp asafoetida (hing)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Oil, for deep frying

Instructions:

  1. Wash and soak the chana dal in water for at least 3-4 hours. Drain the water and set aside.
  2. Reserve 2 tablespoons of soaked chana dal for later use. Grind the remaining chana dal in a mixer or food processor without adding water. The mixture should be coarse and not too smooth.
  3. Transfer the ground dal to a mixing bowl. Add the reserved whole chana dal, chopped onion, coriander leaves, green chilies, grated ginger, curry leaves, fennel seeds, asafoetida, and salt. Mix well to form a thick batter.
  4. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. While the oil is heating, shape the batter into small, round, and slightly flattened patties.
  5. Carefully slide the patties into the hot oil and deep fry them in batches. Do not overcrowd the pan. Fry the masala vadas until they are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  6. Remove the fried vadas from the oil using a slotted spoon and drain them on paper towels to remove excess oil.
  7. Serve the mouthwatering masala vadas hot with coconut chutney, tomato ketchup, or any dip of your choice. Enjoy this crispy and flavorsome snack with a cup of hot tea or coffee.
