Ingredients

  • 2 cups of basmati rice
  • 1 lb of chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 medium tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 tsp of minced ginger
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp of coriander powder
  • 1 tsp of turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp of red chili powder
  • 1 tsp of garam masala
  • 1 tsp of salt
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tbsp of oil
  • Cilantro for garnish

Step-by-Step Recipe

  1. In a saucepan, heat the oil over medium heat and add the cumin seeds. Let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook until it's golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add the ginger and garlic to the saucepan and cook for another 2-3 minutes, or until fragrant.
  4. Add the chopped tomatoes to the saucepan and cook until they're soft and mushy, about 5-7 minutes.
  5. Add the chicken pieces to the saucepan and cook until they're browned on all sides, about 10-12 minutes.
  6. Add the coriander powder, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt to the saucepan and stir well.
  7. Pour the water into the saucepan and let the sauce simmer for 10-12 minutes, or until the chicken is fully cooked.
  8. Meanwhile, rinse the basmati rice in cold water and drain it well. In a separate saucepan, bring 2 cups of water to a boil and add the rice to it. Let the rice cook for 10-12 minutes, or until it's fully cooked.
  9. In a large serving dish, spread half of the cooked rice on the bottom, then pour the chicken and sauce mixture on top of the rice. Spread the remaining rice on top of the chicken mixture and press it down gently.
  10. Cover the serving dish with aluminum foil and let the biryani steam for 5-7 minutes, or until the flavors have fully combined.
  11. Remove the foil and garnish the biryani with cilantro. Serve hot and enjoy!
