Delicious Malaysian Murtabak
Murtabak is a popular street food in Malaysia, and for good reason. The savory, crispy exterior and the soft, fluffy interior make it a staple food for locals and visitors alike. This dish is made from a thin layer of dough that is filled with a mixture of spices, meat, and vegetables, then fried to perfection. In this article, we'll be sharing with you the recipe for a classic Malaysian murtabak.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/2 cup warm water
- 1/2 teaspoon oil
- 1/2 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 tablespoon minced garlic
- 1 tablespoon curry powder
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup chopped green onions
- Oil for frying
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Add the warm water and oil and mix until a dough forms. Knead the dough for 10 minutes until it's smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise for an hour.
- In a pan, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, curry powder, coriander, cumin, paprika, turmeric, salt, and sugar. Cook for 5 minutes until the mixture is fragrant and the onions are soft.
- In a large bowl, beat the egg and green onions together. Stir in the beef mixture and mix well.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion out into a thin circle. Place 2 tablespoons of the beef mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the edges of the dough up and over the filling, sealing the edges to form a pocket. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
- Heat the oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Fry the murtabak for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they're golden brown and crispy. Serve hot with a side of your favorite chutney or dipping sauce.
Tips:
- You can use chicken, lamb, or any other type of ground meat in place of the beef if you prefer.
- For a spicier murtabak, add more spices or a pinch of chili powder to the filling mixture.
