Hyderabad Chicken Dalcha is a traditional Indian dish that originated in the city of Hyderabad. It is a flavorful curry made with chicken, lentils, and a blend of spices.

To make this dish, chicken pieces are marinated with ginger-garlic paste and turmeric powder, and then sautéed in a pot with onions and tomatoes until they are golden brown. Then, a blend of aromatic spices such as cumin, coriander, fennel seeds, cardamom, and cloves are added to the pot and toasted until fragrant.

Next, soaked chana dal (split Bengal gram) is added to the pot along with water and allowed to cook until it is tender. Once the lentils are cooked, tamarind paste is added to the pot to give it a tangy flavor.

To finish the dish, fresh coriander leaves and mint leaves are added to the pot, and the curry is garnished with crispy fried onions. Hyderabad Chicken Dalcha is usually served with rice or roti bread, and it is a delicious and nutritious meal that is packed with protein, fiber, and flavor.

Ingredients:

  • 500g chicken
  • 1 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
  • 2 onions, finely chopped
  • 3 green chillies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons red chilli powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 tomato, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves

Instructions:

  1. Soak the chana dal in water for about 2 hours.
  2. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and sauté the onions till they turn golden brown.
  3. Add the green chillies and ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a few seconds.
  4. Add the chicken and sauté till it turns light brown.
  5. Add turmeric powder, red chilli powder, cumin powder, coriander powder, garam masala powder, and salt. Mix well.
  6. Add the soaked chana dal along with 3 cups of water.
  7. Cover the pressure cooker and cook on high heat till you hear 3-4 whistles.
  8. Once the pressure is released, open the lid and add the chopped tomato and ghee.
  9. Cook for another 5 minutes till the tomato becomes soft.
  10. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
