Homemade Bagel Bliss
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 1 egg white beaten with 1 tablespoon water, for egg wash
- Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced garlic, dried onion flakes, etc.
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until the yeast is activated and the mixture is frothy.
- Add in the flour, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture and stir until a rough dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Divide the dough into 8-12 equal pieces and shape each into a ball. Using your finger, make a hole in the center of each ball and gently stretch to form a bagel shape.
- Brush the egg wash over each bagel and sprinkle with your desired toppings. Place the bagels on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bagels are golden brown and crusty on the outside.
- Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
